Kareen Tanoue is the owner and founder of HI-Performance Pilates, LLC. Kareen was born and raised in Hawai‘i and grew up on the east side of O‘ahu. She left the islands for college in Los Angeles, California, where she earned a BFA in Fashion Design from Otis College of Art and Design. In 2005, after a fulfilling career in the Fashion Industry, Kareen decided to make a huge life change and left a fulfilling career in the Fashion Industry to study Pilates. Already a Pilates practitioner for many years, and having felt personally, the positive effects Pilates had on her, she wanted to pursue a deeper knowledge of the work, and thus her Pilates journey truly began. While studying under Rael Isacowitz at Body Arts and Science International® (BASI), Rael offered her a position with BASI as International Administrator. It was an incredible opportunity for her to be immersed in the Pilates community and still be able to continue to hone her skills as a teacher, while surrounded by the best in Pilates education. After an amazing experience with Rael and the BASI family, Kareen came back home to Hawai‘i, and opened HI-Performance Pilates, LLC in 2007.
Julie Keyes moved to Oahu from Gig Harbor, Washington in 2011 due to her husband’s job transfer. Although she loves Washington, the state where she was born, she equally loves the warmth and beauty of both the people and natural wonder of the islands. Julie suffered for years from chronic low back pain that often made it difficult for her to enjoy the outdoors that she loved so much. A recommendation from her chiropractor changed her life when she was introduced to Pilates as a complementary rehabilitation therapy to chiropractic care and an alternative to surgery. Through Pilates, Julie has been able to prevent surgery and regain the active lifestyle she so greatly values. The success she found through the Pilates method fed her desire to teach and help others. Julie has been committed to the study of Pilates since 2008. In 2011, she decided to take the next step and pursued certification to enable her to teach others the BASI method of Pilates. She has been a fully trained BASI Pilates Instructor since June 2013 and has not looked back ever since.
Alicia began studying Pilates as a young ballet student. As a classically trained dancer, she received extensive coaching in Pilates and other forms of body conditioning to heighten her technique and flexibility. She has trained with Riverside Ballet Arts, Ballet Pacifica, BalletMet, Joffrey Ballet, Harvard Dance, and Boston Ballet, and danced professionally with California Riverside Ballet Arts and Intersect Dance Theatre. Through her years as a dancer, Alicia recognized how well dance and Pilates training complement each other. The physical conditioning of Pilates improved her posture, muscle strength, flexibility, and also acted as injury prevention. Her passion for Pilates grew as she recognized these positive effects, leading Alicia to undertake the comprehensive teacher training course through Body Arts and Science International (BASI). Alicia recently moved to Oahu in May 2015 and is excited to share the Pilates method in the beautiful city of Honolulu.
